Shane Lowry ought to feel like he’s played well enough to win at least once in 2022. Perhaps more.

The Irishman is having a stellar year that’s seen him rise from No. 44 in the Official World Golf Ranking at the end of 2021, and as low as 49 early in 2022, to his current spot at 24.

An unforecasted rain storm late on Sunday at the Honda Classic threw a wrench in his title chances, leaving him to settle for solo second in the closest recent call he’s had.

Lowry wasn’t in contention at the Masters but still posted T-3rd like he did the week after when he did have a realistic chance for the trophy and tartan jacket at the RBC Heritage.

Lowry’s up to five top-10s worldwide this year.

Most recent was T-9th at the Horizon Irish Open.

He followed it up with T-21st at The Open Championship. A couple weeks off before this week should have the 35-year-old rested up for a potentially deep FedEx Cup Playoffs run.

Lowry’s familiar with Sedgefield Country Club. This is his fifth Wyndham Championship start.

Lowry has made three cuts, including T-7th (67-64-67-67) in 2017 and T-23rd (68-63-70-67) in his last visit in 2020.

On the season, he’s 11th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained per round (1.615). Lowry’s 58th or better in SG every category, making him a good fit for most courses.

He’s also fifth in scoring average (69.448) and rarely has a clunker of a round. It’s just about if he can stack up enough birdies at an event where going low is essential.

The 2019 Champion Golfer of the Year hasn’t stepped into the winner’s circle since his fateful day at Royal Portrush. I’m not quite committed to predicting that to end, but I think his hat will be in the ring come Sunday.
