Rejected By LIV: John Daly Turned Away By LIV Golf, Who’s Next?
By Sean McCann
Each week, we get a better picture of what the LIV Golf field will look like going forward.
Big names like Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, and Dustin Johnson look to be the future of the new Tour going forward, at least that’s what Greg Norman hopes.
The more success this new Tour sees, the more attracitve it will look to other golfers. There’s only one problem with that: there are only 48 spots to go around, meaning prominent golfers will eventually start to get turned away by Norman.
Are LIV Golf hopefuls already being denied?
American, John Daly, arguably one of the most colorful and entertaining golfers in the sport over the past 20 years, lobbied hard to sign with LIV Golf.
However, it appears as though that feeling was not mutual between Daly and Norman.
"“Look, I’d rather play with amateurs than the pros sometimes but we’ve got to get compensated for that and the LIV tour has given players that. They play pro-ams, it’s a big party, they play for a lot of money, which these guys that are on that tour, deserve that money. And I think there’s a lot of other guys that deserve that money — especially this old man.”"
It’s hard to blame John Daly for trying, the veteran has been playing on the Champions Tour since he turned 50 back in 2016 and he has not won an event since.
The cart-driving, coke-drinking, eccentric golfer, obviously would love one last chance at a big payday. I’m sure his presence on LIV Golf wouldn’t hurt their ratings either.
But as Norman stated, there’s simply too much interest and too few spots to go around.
"“We have almost on a daily basis, we get calls every day from players [saying] ‘I want in…the list gets longer and longer for the players who want to come in. Which again, is a testament to the right white noise.”"
If John Daly is any indication, it would not be surprising to see more make the LIV jump soon.
It will be interesting to see if any more of the PGA Tour’s stars defect to LIV Golf when the FedEx Cup Playoffs end later this month.
Rumors have already begun linking golfers like Cameron Smith and Xander Schauffele to the controversial series.
As for John Daly, it looks like his future will remain on the Champions Tour, with plenty of Pro-Am appearances in between.
Maybe he can use the extra time to watch his son, John Daly II, pave his way onto the professional scene. Now entering his sophomore season at the University of Arkansas, the young star is following in his father’s footsteps with his powerful drives and electric play.
