A little rust was to be expected for Rory McIlroy.

After his heartbreaking defeat at St. Andrews, McIlroy admitted he put the clubs away for a while. He took three weeks off since finishing third at The Open Championship and returning for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

McIlroy played by no means poorly with a 70-69 at TPC Southwind, but it was a shot shy of making the cut. A bogey on 18 on Friday cost him a paycheck.

McIlroy is still in great position to win the FedEx Cup.

A lot of top players didn’t play well last week, so not much ground was lost.

Prior to Memphis, McIlroy was a winner this season at the CJ Cup and RBC Canadian Open. This was just his second missed cut of the season and first since April. He responded to that MC at the Valero Texas Open with a runner-up finish the next week at the Masters.

The Northern Irishman ranks second on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained per round (2.167), only behind Matt Fitzpatrick (2.235). McIlroy has played consistently well throughout 2021-22.

He didn’t drive it well last week. Fortunately, Wilmington Country Club should suit his bombing style better than TPC Southwind.

The 33-year-old ranks fifth in SG off the tee (.734) and is second in driving distance (319.5). He’s also first in scoring average (68.669) and 11th in SG putting (.539).

Not that there’s a cut to worry about this week at the BMW Championship, but McIlroy has never missed two in a row since 2017. Expect a bounce-back performance.
