Tony Finau was unable to become the first player in five years to win three straight PGA Tour events. He at least put up a gallant effort.

Finau fired 64-68-69-68 to finish T-5th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and keep his hopes of a FedEx Cup title high. He finished four shots off the pace in Memphis.

Finau finished ninth on the week in strokes gained putting (3.98) and was solid in most statistical categories.

Per CBS Sports’ Kyle Porter, Finau entered the week ranked third in the world in strokes gained tee to green since May 1 only behind Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. Wins in recent weeks at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic had a lot to do with that. Finau is sixth on the season in that stat.

Finau also had runner-up finishes this season at the Mexico Open at Vidanta and RBC Canadian Open. The big Utahn recorded his fifth straight made cut last week.

Finau should be a lock for the American Presidents Cup team.

The former “Big Break” contestant ranks fifth on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation. His bomb and gouge style doesn’t always equip to majors, but it does tons of damage on PGA Tour set-ups.

That seems to be the style of play that could succeed at Wilmington Country Club.

Finau has never looked more free and easy out there these days. His permanently positive attitude got him through a lot of close calls going against him in recent years.

The bad luck began to turn around in the 2021 playoffs.

Last year, Finau got it done in the playoffs with a win in a playoff over Cam Smith at The Northern Trust. Wouldn’t a repeat of that be juicy? Especially with the PGA Tour vs. LIV chaos mixed in.

Both are in the right form to make it happen.
