Automatic qualifiers for this year’s Presidents Cup were finalized on Sunday. Did Spieth and Morikawa miss out?

The six automatic qualifying spots for next month’s U.S. Presidents Cup team were determined following the conclusion of the BMW Championship on Sunday.

Following a nearly three-year qualification process, which began back in 2019 at the A Military Tribute at the Greenbriar, six players now know they will be representing the stars and stripes at the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow.

Masters champion, Scottie Scheffler, secured the top overall spot in the U.S. qualification standings. Scottie accumulated 12,670 points throughout the qualification process to comfortably lock down his spot.

Back-to-back BMW Champion, Patrick Cantlay, finished second in the qualification process to also earn his automatic spot on the team. After Scheffler and Cantlay, the rest of the top six finished as follows:

  • 3rd:  Sam Burns – 8,981 points
  • 4th:  Xander Schauffele – 8,830 points
  • 5th:  Justin Thomas – 8,694 points
  • 6th:  Tony Finau – 8,477 points

What about Presidents Cup hopefuls Jordan Spieth and Collin Morikawa?

Will Zalatoris narrowly missed out on automatic qualification for the Presidents Cup team and the same can be said about Jordan Spieth and Collin Morikawa.

However, with U.S. captain Davis Love III being able to select an additional six players to take with him to North Carolina in a month, it can be widely assumed that those three will certainly be captain’s picks for the U.S. team.

Max Homa, Billy Horschel, and Cameron Young rounded out the top twelve on the points list. All three will have another opportunity to impress captain Davis Love III at next week’s season finale Tour Championship in Atlanta.

For Kevin Kisner, Cameron Tringale, and Maverick McNealy, however, their season, unfortunately, came to a close this past weekend after they finished outside of the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings. All three will now have to wait until Wednesday, September 7th, when captain Love III announces his captain’s picks, to find out their Presidents Cup fate.

One last statement?

Tom Hoge, J.T. Poston, and Brian Harman will all have one final start to impress captain Davis Love III after each player advanced to next week’s season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake.

Tom Hoge and J.T. Poston were both winners on Tour this season after their wins at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and John Deere Classic, respectively.

Harman did not pick up a win this season, however, the 35-year-old recorded two top 3 finishes at both The American Express and FedEx St. Jude Championship. He also had a handful of other top 10 finishes this year.

While all three are probably longshots to make the U.S. Presidents Cup team with some of the big names ahead of them, perhaps one final statement this week in Atlanta could be enough to sway captain Love’s decision.
