2022 Tour Championship: Top 10 power rankings at East Lake
Jon Rahm tied for the low gross score last year at the Tour Championship, but it wasn’t quite enough to win the whole shebang.
Rahm posted 65-65-68-68 to finish one shot behind Patrick Cantlay, who began the week with a two-shot lead over second place and four-shot lead over Rahm, who began in fourth.
The Spaniard has qualified for the Tour Championship for the sixth time in his career and sixth year in a row.
He’s finished on the top half of the leaderboard every time with three top-10s. Rahm finished fourth on the net leaderboard in 2020 and sixth gross after scores of 65-74-66-66.
“With those Bermuda fairways, Bermudagrass, mainly the Bermuda rough, if you can keep it in the fairway you’ll be able to be a lot more aggressive to certain pins, and for the most part obviously have a lot more control,” Rahm was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2020 talking about East Lake.
The former Arizona State Sun Devil should be thankful to be in a position to win the FedEx Cup title after a fairly disappointing season by his lofty standards.
Rahmbo has just one win in the 2021-22 PGA Tour season. That came by one shot against a weak field at the Mexico Open at Vidanta.
The 27-year-old hasn’t contended as much as he’d like.
That’s been changing lately.
He finished T-5th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and T-8th at the BMW Championship to accrue a pair of top-10s in the playoffs. Rahm also made the cut at all four majors this year and hasn’t missed a cut on the PGA Tour since September.
He ranks third on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained per round (1.794). Rahm is still hitting it as well as ever at fourth in SG tee to green (1.537).
Short game and putting have never been huge strengths, but they’re not as passable this season. They have improved in the past couple of weeks.
I expect that to continue at a course he knows well.
