2022 Tour Championship: Top 10 power rankings at East Lake
The way Tony Finau’s been playing lately, it only seems fair to make him start with a disadvantage.
The big Utahn will begin the week tied for sixth place and six shots off the lead.
He cooled off a little last week at the BMW Championship where an opening 77 sunk his chances. Finau admirably fought back at the no-cut event to climb from near the bottom of the 70-player field to T-28th after 68-67-68.
Finau also got the news he locked up one of the six automatic qualifying spots for the American Presidents Cup team, so it was a nice way for him to end the week.
Now, Finau is at the Tour Championship for the sixth time in his career and six years in a row.
His top results are T-7th (68-71-68-66) in 2017 and seventh/T-7th gross (70-69-70-67) in 2019.
Last year, Finau posted 72-67-73-68 to take T-11th net and T-24th gross.
Finau should still be buzzing from his torrid late summer run.
The 32-year-old couldn’t seal the deal this season at the Mexico Open at Vidanta (T-2nd) or the RBC Canadian Open (2nd). He found his mettle to win the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic in back-to-back weeks.
After taking a week off, Finau got back in the saddle to contend at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
He ranks 12th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained per round (1.55). His ball striking is his calling card. Finau ranks seventh in SG tee to green (1.474) and seventh in SG approach (.718).
He’ll need plenty of birdies to catch Scottie Scheffler and the rest of the stalwarts ahead of him. Finau is 11th in birdies per round (4.23) and 12th in par breakers (23.98%).
