Rory and Tiger Pair Up for New Team Golf League of Their Own
Picture this. A golf game of 18 holes in two hours, between two, three-man, all-star teams like Tiger Woods and two others, or Rory McIlroy and two others, or Woods and McIlroy and name your star against the world.
Their long shots are played with a simulator that has a screen almost as big as an IMAX. Then they play short shots for real. Live, in front of you, with bunkers and a green that you can see because you’re either in the bleachers or watching from home.
They can do all 18 holes in two hours because they subtract the time of walking and just feature golf shots! The audience guarantees some enthusiasm. And betting would be allowed. Would you watch? Most avid golf fans would.
TGL, which is supposedly Tech-Infused Golf League, but what I’m going to call Tiger’s Golf League, is slated to start in January of 2024 and will go for 17 weeks with 15 regular matches plus a semi-final and final match. There will be six teams and they will all play each other once with some yet-to-be-explained method of advancing.
The day and the times are perfect, according to Tiger and Rory’s third partner, Mike McCarley, who is the CEO of the company which is called TMRW. The fourth partner is silent, but it’s the PGA Tour.
McCarley, as well as McIlroy, were on hand at the Tour Championship to outline the new twist on golf.
Rory McIlroy thinks it’s great for Tiger Woods because it doesn’t require much walking.
“Who knows where we’re going to see Tiger Woods play golf next, right?” McIlroy commented.
"“We don’t know what his schedule is going to be. We don’t know how his body is going to be. But to be able to see him still showcase his skills on prime time, on TV without really any wear and tear on his body, I think to be able to see Tiger hit golf shots and still sort of provide people with a glimpse of his genius.”"
The location has not yet been determined. And while they think it will be one spot in the first year, they are not ruling out the potential to have this move around the country.
When asked about the purse, McCarley had a general answer.
“Rough terms, I see the terms boatload and truckload being thrown around a lot lately,” he suggested. “Maybe it’ll be in between those two, but we’ll announce the purse as we get a little bit closer to the start date.”
Rory McIlroy is enthusiastic about this new concept, believing it gives players a chance to show their personalities more than they can in a normal round of competitive golf. He also thinks some younger viewers will enjoy it.
But the best part is that it will give people a chance to see Tiger Woods hit golf balls in person and on television. For more info: www.TMRWSportsGroup.com
