With a good chunk of the Sea Island Mafia aging out of the primes of their PGA Tour careers, Keith Mitchell offers up one of the best shots to win out of the local talent this week.

He’s no spring chicken at age 30, but he’s had a solid career up to this point and can continue to build on that through the rest of the decade-plus.

Mitchell still has just the one win at the 2019 Honda Classic, but he’s been knocking on the door for more.

The former Georgia Bulldog posted five top-10s last season, including T-3rd at the CJ Cup.

It wasn’t a top-10, but Mitchell played nicely en route to a T-12th at the 2021 RSM Classic. He went out in style, playing the back nine bogey-free on Sunday in 5-under 30 with birdies on 12, 15, 16, 17, and 18.

Mitchell opened the tournament with a 68 at Plantation followed by 67-70-65.

He’s made four of five cuts at Sea Island, including T-14th (70-66-66-68) in 2019.

Mitchell is coming into the week off of his best finish of 2022-23, a T-9th at the Cadence Bank Houston Open. He never scared Tony Finau, who ran away for the victory, but Mitchell’s scores of 66-70-70-68 are solid around a tricky Memorial Park Layout.

The Tennessean ranked fourth on the PGA Tour last season in strokes gained off the tee (.761). His length isn’t a huge asset this week, but it can help him on some into-the-wind shots if it’s cool and gusty like the early forecast hints at.

Going low is also important at an event like this. Mitchell was 24th in birdie average (4.06).
