2023 Sony Open in Hawaii: Top 10 Power Rankings at Waialae
Harman has more appearances at the Sony Open in Hawaii than anyone else in this week’s power rankings.
The former Georgia Bulldog is at Waialae for the 12th time in a row and 12th overall. He’s made nine of 11 cuts highlighted by T-4th (64-63-68-70) in 2018. In ‘18, he led after 36 holes and was in second place after 54.
In total, he has three top-20s at this event.
Also working in Harman’s favor is the great form he’s shown in the early going of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season. The 35-year-old has finished 23rd or better in all five events, including a solo second at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba and T-2nd at the RSM Classic.
A T-16th (68-69-67-70) last week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions doesn’t jump off the page. However, finishing in the top half of an elite field at a big ballpark like Kapalua that doesn’t suit Harman’s game is a good sign.
He was T-10th in the field in sand saves (75%) and eighth in scrambling (72.22%).
A shorter, tighter layout like Waialae is more conducive.
The lefty was 159th on the PGA Tour last season in driving distance (292.2) but 21st in driving accuracy (66.56%).
Harman gained strokes in every SG category and has no glaring weaknesses aside from a lack of distance.
He was also 10th in sand saves (61.87%) and 17th in par-4 scoring (3.98).
Harman hasn’t won since the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship. Events like the Sony are his best chances to get win No. 3 on the board before it’s too late.
