Death, taxes, and Sungjae Im finishing between 10th and 12th place at The American Express are the three surest things in life.

The South Korean star has teed it up in Palm Springs every year since 2019 when he debuted with a T-12th finish.

He improved to T-10th in 2020 and slipped ever so slightly to T-12th in 2021, and T-11th last year.

"“I feel comfortable playing at The American Express and visually from the tee box it’s a course that I really like and enjoy to play,” Im was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2021."

Diving into his most recent performance, he opened with 3-under 69 at the Nicklaus course, followed with 5-under 67 at Stadium, and safely made the cut after a 2-under 70 at La Quinta. Not going lower at La Quinta cost him from being in contention, but Im climbed 20 spots up the leaderboard thanks to a Sunday 66 back at Stadium.

He was bogey-free his last 32 holes. For the field in two rounds at Stadium, Im was first in strokes gained tee to green (8.663).

The 24-year-old was quietly sixth on the PGA Tour last season in total SG per round (1.668). Im doesn’t have the high ceiling of a Jon Rahm or Rory McIlroy, but he’s got one of the lowest floors of anybody in pro golf.

He was eighth in SG approach (.651) and top 50 in every category. It’s hard to win The American Express without at least one eagle. Im was third in holes per eagle (88.0).
