Max Homa’s due to turn the tide at Torrey Pines.

The Los Angeles native posted nice results of T-9th in 2020 and T-18th in 2021 at the Farmers Insurance Open, but he went on to miss the cut at the 2021 U.S. Open and last year’s Farmers.

In 2020, he improved each time on the South Course, starting with a 1-over 73 on Thursday, 71 on Friday, and 67 to climb 22 spots on Sunday.

Homa didn’t have his sharpest stuff on the week, but he was T-5th in scrambling (75%) and avoided double bogey or worse on a demanding set of courses.

Homa got his 2023 off to a good start with a T-3rd finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. He wasn’t really in the mix behind champion Jon Rahm and runner-up Collin Morikawa, but it was still a nice week.

The former Cal Golden Bear earned his way to Kapalua thanks to a win for the second year in a row last fall at the Fortinet Championship. Homa took the last two weeks off.

He’s won twice in California and can do it at a third different tournament this week.

Last season on the PGA Tour, Homa improved in every per-round strokes gained category. Biggest jumps from 2020-21 to 2021-22 were around the green, going from 157th (-.124) to 57th (.165) and from 118th (-.043) to 27th (.369).

He was 13th in total SG per round (1.343) and has the skill set to play well at a variety of courses.
