2023 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 Power Rankings at Torrey Pines
Now that Tony Finau is picking off wins on a much more regular basis, it’s more realistic to start envisioning which new venue he’ll win at next.
Torrey Pines seems like the place for him. It allows big, brawny ball striking and steady ball striking to succeed here. His putting combined with poa annua greens can be a tough combo, but Finau can gain shots on the field in other ways.
For his career at this venue, he has made seven of eight cuts at the Farmers Insurance Open and missed the cut at the 2021 U.S. Open. Finau’s best came at the 2021 Farmers when he fired 69-67-74-69 to finish T-2nd. The 67 was on the North course.
"“I think guys that hit it with some length, hit it with some height, you’re able to put some short irons in guys’ hands,” Finau was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2021, “so I played it well.”"
He finished T-4th (73-68-67-71) in 2017, T-6th (65-70-73-73) in 2018 and again in 2020 (70-70-68-70) to make four top-10s at this event.
Finau hopes he regresses to the mean and gets back into the top 10 after missing the cut here at the 2021 U.S. Open and 2022 Farmers.
He’s coming off a T-16th finish last week at The American Express. It was his fourth straight top-16 finish with the streak beginning with his win at the Cadence Bank Houston Open last November.
That gives him a win on the young 2022-23 PGA Tour season after winning twice in 2021-22. Finau ranked 10th in total strokes gained per round (1.499) and was fifth in SG tee to green (1.408).
He was only 40th in driving distance (308), but that’s deceiving as he leaves plenty in the reserves on most swings. Finau hits tons of greens (5th in GIR, 71.25%) and should have enough birdie looks to overcome some missed putts.
