2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Top 10 Power Rankings
Viktor Hovland arrives to Pebble Beach for the fourth time in his career. His first trip to the Monterey Peninsula came in 2018 when he won the U.S. Amateur. Hovland fired an even-par 72 at Pebble Beach and one-over 73 at Spyglass Hill to safely make the top 64 for match play in a tie for 24th.
As the No. 27 seed, Hovland stormed to the finals where he blitzed 2018 tournament runner-up Devon Bling 6&5.
He came back in 2019 and finished T-12th (69-73-71-67) at the U.S. Open. That earned the Norwegian low amateur honors.
He soon turned pro and began what’s been a prosperous few years thus far.
Hovland returned to Pebble Beach in 2020 for the Pro-Am. He shot 2-under 70 to open at Spyglass Hill and 3-under 68 Friday at Monterey Peninsula. Hovland was in the top 15 after a 2-under 70 in round three at Pebble, but a Sunday 77 spoiled an otherwise solid week where he saw the first two courses for the first time.
The 25-year-old Oklahoma State alum ranked 15th on the PGA Tour last season in strokes gained approach per round (.606). Even with the courses set up for amateurs to get around, the green sites, especially at Pebble, are small. Being able to dial in to small targets is something Hovland can do.
He was second in proximity from 125-150 yards (19’6”) and can attack the par-5s ranking first in approaches from 200-225 yards (33’2”).
Hovland comes to California well-rested after three weeks off since finishing T-18th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Prior, he defended his title at the 18-man Hero World Challenge exhibition in December.
In a field devoid of top talent, this is a golden opportunity to pick up his fourth official career win.
