2023 Genesis Invitational: Top 10 Power Rankings at Riviera
With three top-10s in his last five starts at the Genesis Invitational, Justin Thomas lands among the favorites this week.
In total at Riviera Country Club, JT has made six of eight cuts with his best finish a solo second in 2019. It looked like he was destined to win, but he lost the lead late on a wind-swept Sunday.
That year, he shot 66-65-65-75. He also took T-9th (69-71-67-70) in 2018 and sixth (67-64-70-70) last year.
"“It’s a ball-strikers course, that’s why I played it well,” Thomas was transcribed in 2020 by Tee Scripts. “It’s a strength of my game, but you just have to have control of your ball”"
The former Alabama Crimson Tide is coming off a nice week at the WM Phoenix Open. He fired 71-68-67-65 and climbed 12 spots on the leaderboard in the final round to finish solo fourth.
Thomas wasn’t in contention to win down the stretch, but often his less than ‘A’ game weeks still produce good results.
He was third in the field in strokes gained off the tee (4.723) and second in SG tee to green (12.119). Had a few more putts fell, Thomas could’ve given winner Scottie Scheffler a real run.
Thomas at TPC Scottsdale recorded his best finish in four official starts in the 2022-23 PGA Tour season and his third straight top-25.
Last season, Thomas ranked eighth in SG tee to green per round (1.445). He can hit any shot asked of him both on full swings and near the green. He was second in SG around the green (.854).
