Fantasy Golf Showdown: 2023 Genesis Invitational Saturday Selections
By Derek Helm
I will provide a quick summary of the first two rounds of the Genesis Invitational before diving into my favorite plays for Round 3 Showdown contests on DraftKings.
Keep in mind that we want to project future success and not rely on previous accomplishments.
The Genesis Invitational opened with some impressive scoring with 26 golfers finishing the round with a 68 or better. Max Homa and Keith Mitchell led the way shooting -7 with eight birdies and one bogey each.
Both were impressive off the tee and on approach. Homa made a number of impressive putts and gained the 6th most strokes putting on the round. Jon Rahm also made eight birdies but added an extra bogey en route to his first-round 65.
Keith Mitchell played well again on Friday but was uncharacteristically propelled by the short game. The ball striking fell off a bit especially off the tee. Regardless, he’s -9 for the tournament and currently sitting in 2nd place.
Homa finished his front nine at even par while Jon Rahm bogeyed three of his first nine holes. Homa currently has a one-stroke lead at the end of play on Friday.
*At time of writing the second round has not yet concluded. All statistics are based on metrics from the first two rounds of play.
2023 Genesis Invitational: Round 3 DraftKings Showdown Plays
Scottie Scheffler ($10,100)
Scheffler has been off with the driver the past few rounds but seemed to have corrected his swing during round two earlier today. With the way he’s been swinging his irons, he could do some serious damage on Saturday.
Jason Day ($8,400)
Day was a mess in round one losing just under four strokes tee to green. He was bailed out by his putter and was lucky to come away only one stroke over par. Round two was a different story; especially off the tee. Day only hit 6 of 14 fairways during the opening round of the Genesis Invitational, but he led the field in strokes gained off the tee on Friday; hitting 12 of 14 fairways.
Sahith Theegala ($7,400)
Theegala had another great day with his irons today. He’s gained just under five strokes on approach through two rounds of this year’s Genesis Invitational.
Theegala has been good with the putter gaining strokes on the green in six of his last seven tournaments. He’s continued the hot streak gaining 1.2 strokes on the green this week as well. I expect the approach game and putting to continue through the weekend at Riviera.
Shane Lowry ($7,200)
Lowry had an up-and-down first round with two birdies, two eagles, and four bogeys which resulted in an opening 69. Round two was a bit more consistent other than two bogeys on his final three holes. Shane was more consistent with his irons gaining 1.7 strokes on approach in round two and shooting 69 for the 2nd straight day.
