2023 Players Championship: Top 10 Power Rankings at TPC Sawgrass
Some of Tyrrell Hatton’s best golf in the United States tends to come in Florida. Not only is he a horse for the course at Bay Hill, where the past champion finished T-4th last week, but he posted his best Players Championship finish last year.
Hatton posted a steady 70-73-69-70 to finish T-13th at 6-under.
The Englishman’s looking like a Ryder Cup member for this fall in Rome.
Since September, Hatton’s got six top-10s between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. In 2023 alone, Hatton’s got three top-10s and hasn’t finished outside the top 40 in five starts.
Along with the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Hatton also finished well at another designated event by taking T-6th at the WM Phoenix Open.
Hatton is known to be a solid putter. He ranked fourth on the PGA Tour last season in strokes gained per round putting (.742) and is still a healthy 40th (.448) in 2022-23.
The flat stick let him down on Sunday at the API, but I expect it to come around.
Hatton’s ball striking has been great this season. He’s ninth in SG off-the-tee (.832) and 10th tee-to-green (1.291).
This will be the 31-year-old’s sixth start at TPC Sawgrass. After debuting in T-41st in 2017, he missed three cuts in a row.
Hatton was in good shape to make the weekend in 2020 when he opened in 3-under 69 before the tournament was canceled.
He shot that same number Friday of 2021, but a 76 on Thursday was too much to overcome.
If Hatton can keep his temper in check and avoid hitting his balls in the water, or throwing them in there in disgust, I expect him to be a factor late on Sunday.
