Denny McCarthy has never missed a weekend at the Valspar Championship.

In fact, he’s never placed worse than T-48th. McCarthy’s 2019 debut at Innisbrook produced his best finish at this event, T-9th (68-74-69-69). He was just four off the lead.

That top 10 helped him keep his card for 2020-21. McCarthy’s been a mainstay on the PGA Tour ever since and has become one of the best putters in the world.

McCarthy is also becoming one of the top players without a win. He’s been sniffing around in 2022-23 with four top-15s in 14 starts.

The former Virginia Cavalier peaked with T-4th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He also played well at designated events like the Genesis Invitational (T-14th) and last week at the Players Championship (T-13th).

McCarthy ranks 40th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained per round (.668). He’s 25th in SG putting (.542), a stat he ranked second in throughout 2021-22 (.818).

This season, the 30-year-old’s also first in scrambling from the fringe (100%) and scrambling from inside 10 yards (100%). That means if he can just get a putter on the ball, even from off the green, he’s adept at judging pace and line.

McCarthy’s also third in putting from inside 10 feet (91.61%).

While he lacks the explosivity of the top stars, McCarthy is never out of a hole and can grind out high finishes. I like him to build off his nice week at TPC Sawgrass and breakthrough for a win at a non-designated event before season’s end.
