Cam Young may have hit one of the shots of the year on Thursday during a very unextraordinary round at this year’s RBC Heritage.

The opening round of this year’s RBC Heritage didn’t exactly go to plan for Cam Young on Thursday at Harbour Town.

The affable 25-year-old who is still in search of his first win on tour has been tearing up golf courses across the country of late.

Young followed up a sensational run through to the final of the last-ever WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event at Austin Country Club a couple of weeks back with an impressive showing in just his second-ever Masters last week.

Rounds of 67-72-75-68 at Augusta National meant that Cameron not only made his first cut in the Masters; but secured his first top 10 finish at the historic tournament as well. Of course, the talented golfer is no stranger to producing on the big stage already.

Young posted a 3rd place finish at the PGA Championship last year and then for an encore went on to finish runner-up at last summer’s 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews as well. Quite remarkably, he has finished runner-up to the eventual champion in an event on seven different occasions already throughout the early part of his PGA Tour career.

For Cam Young, it seems it’s more of a question of when, not if, he earns that first win. And after holding the first-round lead at last year’s RBC Heritage on the way to earning another top three finish on tour, expectations surely would have been high for Young coming into this week.

Young opened with a solid but unspectacular even-par 71 on Thursday during a round that looked promising at the start before eventually falling flat. Cam missed several excellent scoring opportunities throughout the course of a first round that was suspended at one point and time due to inclement weather.

But for the 25-year-old, the rather disappointing round included what was arguably one of the shots of the year thus far.

Cam Young hits a ridiculous shot on the opening hole at Harbour Town.

Young’s start to the tournament appeared as though it was going to be a complete disaster when Cam stepped into the first tee box and proceeded to launch his first shot of the day to the left of the fairway and seemingly bound for trouble.

But then he caught a break, his ball had stayed inbounds and was safe, and Young proceeded to take full advantage of the fortuitous break.  Cam’s ridiculous second shot hooked around the trees and landed on the green within six feet of the hole on the par 4 1st at Harbour Town.

The stunning opening birdie was easily the highlight during a relatively frustrating round for Young at this year’s RBC Heritage.

The talented 25-year-old has some work to do on Friday if he is going to make the cut in this year’s event, let alone find himself in contention once again over the weekend. But who knows how pivotal a role that extraordinary shot during a rather unextraordinary round of golf may play when all is said and done.
