2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta: Top 10 Power Rankings
Jon Rahm has shown a lot of character in recent weeks.
After winning the Masters, it would’ve been understandable for Jon Rahm to skip the RBC Heritage the next week (even though it’s a designated event).
He didn’t. And he shook off a lackluster even-par round on Thursday to finish T-15th and beat a ton of big names just like he did at Augusta National.
Rahmbo finally got the week off he deserved last week to soak in winning his first green jacket.
He likely would want to take more time off, but he’s a man of his word sticking to his commitment to defend his title at the Mexico Open at Vidanta.
In its maiden edition as a PGA Tour event last year, Rahm fired 64-66-68-69 to win by one over Tony Finau, Kurt Kitayama, and Brandon Wu.
"“It’s a really good golf course. And the one thing to keep in mind for people watching the scores, there’s a big difference between morning and afternoon,” Rahm was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2022. “We had no wind for 13, 14 holes, it’s very, very scorable. Once the wind starts going 20, 30 miles an hour, this golf course starts showing some teeth. It’s long, you have a couple really long par 4s, 4 and 8 straight into the wind, both of them 500 yards, so you can start seeing higher scores out there.”"
Not only did Rahm win the Masters, but the Arizona State alum also won at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The American Express, and the Genesis Invitational.
He’s at the height of his powers.
Rahm leads the PGA Tour in total strokes gained per round (2.421) and is third in SG tee-to-green (1.849). Three of the par-3s this week are 195-plus yards. He’s second in approach proximity from 175-200 yards (28’11”) and first from 200-225 (32’1”).
