2023 Wells Fargo Championship: Top 10 Power Rankings at Quail Hollow

It will be interesting to see how Rory McIlroy performs this week.

He rightfully caught some heat for skipping his second designated event of the season a few weeks back at the RBC Heritage. McIlroy also skipped the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

More than one missed designated event during the season results in PIP money being docked at the end of the season; if you’re eligible.

At time of writing, no reason has been given for McIlroy’s withdrawal after missing the cut at the Masters.

There was no sign of injury, and many speculate he just wanted time away after a busy Q1 and the heartbreak of once again missing out on his first green jacket.

It’s hard to know what kind of mindset he’s in, but assuming the three weeks off at least recharges his physical battery, then I’d expect a high finish this week.

Quail Hollow is suited tremendously for McIlroy’s game. It’s a wide, girthy course where driving and ball striking like his are rewarded.

Through April 26, The 33-year-old ranks first on the PGA Tour in driving distance (326.6) and is fifth in strokes gained per round off-the-tee (.852).

The proof is in the results. The Northern Irishman won this tournament in his debut in 2010 thanks to a course record 10-under 62 on Sunday.

He won again in 2015 (70-67-61-69) where he beat his previous course record and won the tournament by seven. He won again by one in 2021 (72-66-68-68), took T-2nd (70-68-66-70) in 2012, and in total, counting the 2017 PGA Championship, he has 10 made cuts in 11 appearances. All 10 were T-22nd or better.

Recent form has been a bit hot and cold over the last couple months, but his cold streaks are never too long.
