2023 Charles Schwab Challenge: Dark Horses for Colonial
By Derek Helm
Each week I will provide my favorite chalk and Dark Horse plays for the upcoming DraftKings DFS slate. This week I will highlight my favorite DraftKings plays for the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge.
A value play is determined by a golfer being underpriced or coming in at lower ownership. I’ll also establish who will be the most rostered on the slate; also known as the “chalk”.
We always want to play the best plays but need leverage as well. Determining the difference between good “chalk” (highly owned) and bad “chalk” is essential.
I’ll list which of the high-owned golfers I like the most this week. Pairing those plays with lower-owned and lower-priced golfers (Dark Horses) is the optimal way to build and gives us the best route to winning a DraftKings contest.
*Ownership projections are estimates and will vary from contest to contest. The percentage provided is in regard to guaranteed prize pools on DraftKings.
2023 Charles Schwab Challenge: Favorite Chalk Plays
Scottie Scheffler ($11,500)
DK Ownership: 25-27% – It’s nearly impossible to make a case against Scottie. Even when he has an off week he’s finishing well. His worst finish in 2023 is 12th place.
Scottie is 1st in strokes gained approach, 1st off the tee, 1st in opportunities gained, and 8th around the green over the last 24 rounds.
Collin Morikawa ($10,400)
DK Ownership: 16-18% – Morikawa came 2nd at Colonial back in 2020 and followed that up with a 14th place finish in 2021.
Over the last 50 rounds he’s 2nd in strokes gained approach, 2nd on par fours between 400-450 yards, 3rd in fairways gained, 9th in approaches from 150-175 yards, and 14th in opportunities gained.
2023 Charles Schwab Challenge: Dark Horse Plays
Russell Henley ($8,800)
DK Ownership: 9-11% – Henley missed the cut at the PGA Championship but was playing well previously. He came 19th at the RBC Heritage, 4th at the Masters, and 19th at THE PLAYERS.
He’s gained strokes on approach in four straight tournaments. I like his game for Colonial. He’s 1st in fairways gained, 11th in opportunities gained, 14th in strokes gained approach, and 16th on par fours from 400-450 yards over the last 50 rounds.
Stephan Jaeger ($8,100)
DK Ownership: 10-12% – Jaeger played fairly well at the PGA Championship last week. He had some good showings leading up to last week coming 11th at the Byron Nelson, 27th at the Wells Fargo, and 18th at the Mexico Open.
Jaeger has gained strokes off the tee in six of his last eight tournaments, and strokes on approach in seven of his last nine tournaments.
Jaeger is 4th in par four scoring, 12th in strokes gained off the tee, 16th around the green, and 26th on approach over the last 24 rounds.
Ben Martin ($6,800)
DK Ownership: 9-11% – Martin missed the cut at the Wells Fargo but had previously made eight straight cuts. He also had three top 10 finishes over that span.
Martin is 9th in strokes gained approach, 9th in opportunities gained, and 9th on par fours from 400-450 yards.
Bentgrass is also his best putting surface.
Mark Hubbard ($6,600)
DK Ownership: 4-6% – Hubbard had a rough weekend at the PGA Championship but we can chalk that up to a tough course in tough conditions.
Leading up to the PGA, he had finishes of 27th, 18th, and 11th. He’s gained strokes on approach in four straight tournaments.
Hubbard is 13th in fairways gained and 14th on approaches from 150-175 yards over the last 24 rounds.
Bentgrass is also his best putting surface.
