Outside of perhaps the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas where he’s a winner and top-10 machine, there might not be a better tournament and course for Patrick Cantlay than the Memorial Tournament and Muirfield Village.

If you add in a T-7th (70-72-70-65) at the 2020 Workday Charity Open, Cantlay has made all seven cuts in Dublin with wins at the 2019 (68-69-68-64) and 2021 (69-67-68-71) Memorial.

He also took solo fourth (68-69-66-71) in 2018 and T-3rd (72-69-69-71) in 2022.

"“One of the things I like about this golf course is it’s pretty straightforward once you get to know it,” Cantlay was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2019. “You know when you hit a good shot, and good shots are rewarded; and bad shots, they’re bad shots. It’s going to be hard to scramble and make pars.”"

Muirfield Village can be a penal course, but not to the extent of a major championship, where Cantlay tends to struggle.

He did rally for T-9th at the 2023 PGA Championship with a Sunday 65.

That was Cantlay’s eighth straight top-21 or better. He’s yet to win this season but already looks well on his way back to East Lake with six top-10s, including T-2nd at the aforementioned Shriners.

The former UCLA Bruin ranks first on the PGA Tour in total driving (36), which combines distance rank (27th) and accuracy rank (9th). He’s fourth in total strokes gained per round (2.056) and second in SG off-the-tee (.968).

He was top-12 in all SG categories at the Memorial last year except for around-the-green. A few more up-and-downs and he could’ve made things a little more interesting for the champ, Billy Horschel.
