123rd U.S. Open: Prize Purse and Payouts by Position
Breaking down this week’s 123rd U.S. Open Purse, Prize money, and Payouts by position at Los Angeles Country Club.
The 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club came under scrutiny early in the week after the host of the year’s third golf major yielded record-breaking scores on day one.
Both Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele etched their names in the record books after opening with stunning 62s Thursday. Both players will have a chance to win their maiden major on Sunday at LACC.
Speaking of record-breaking, the summertime major will divvy out a U.S. Open record-setting purse in 2023. The 20 million dollar purse for the 123rd United States Open Championship is right on par with this season’s ‘elevated’ events on the PGA Tour. It is also up from the 17.5 million dollar prize that was on offer last year at The Country Club in Brookline.
Not only have the stakes been raised this time around, but every player who qualified for the 123rd U.S. Open and made the journey to LA this week will take home a prize, regardless of whether they made the cut or not.
How much will the U.S. Open Champion take home?
The winner of the year’s third major championship will take home a handsome 3.6 million dollar prize.
Paying out 20 million puts the U.S. Open purse level with every other PGA Tour designated events’ purse this year, as previously mentioned, and only behind THE PLAYERS Championship for the largest of 2023.
In comparison, last month’s PGA Championship dished out 17.5 million, and The Masters in April paid out a total of 18 million this year.
Who will claim the third major of the year?
Both of 2023’s previous winners at majors are likely out of the running to add another title to their cabinet this week, meaning that for a third time this year, we will have a different winner on golf’s biggest stage.
While Xander Schauffele faded a bit on moving day after a Saturday-73, Rickie Fowler (-10) is well-placed heading into Sunday to at long last, win that first major championship. Fowler finds himself in a share for the lead heading into the final round after a Saturday-70, alongside Wells Fargo Champion, Wyndham Clark (-10), who continued his fine play this week with a 69 during the third round.
Two players who are in search of their first major have some big names in close proximity behind them on the leaderboard heading into Sunday. Rory McIlroy (-9) finds himself just one shot back as he looks to finally add major number five to his collection. Meanwhile, PLAYERS Champion Scottie Scheffler (-7) is three adrift as looks to win his second major after his triumph at The Masters in 2022.
While Harris English (-6), 2020 Masters winner Dustin Johnson (-5), and another player looking for that major breakthrough, Xander Schauffele (-5), are all within five shots of the leaders going into the final round of the 2023 U.S. Open.
Glory and a handsome payday await the player who holds their nerve on Sunday. Here is this year’s complete prize breakdown by position for the 123rd playing of the United States Open.
