Fantasy Golf: Rocket Mortgage Classic DFS Player Selections
By Hans Geevers
This week, the PGA Tour presents fantasy golf fans with the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Let’s take a look at this tournament from a fantasy golf perspective.
The 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic will be played at Detroit Golf Club in Detroit, Michigan. The Detroit Golf Club has been the host course for the Rocket Mortgage Classic since the event’s inception on the PGA Tour in 2019.
Before I discuss my fantasy golf player selections I wanted to emphasize that the purpose of this article is not to provide an exact lineup for a specific fantasy provider.
Having stated that, this article will provide multiple player options in an effort to assist the reader in generating a unique lineup that will hopefully have the potential to win a GPP (guaranteed prize pool) contest!
Now let’s shift our attention to my favorite fantasy golf/DFS player selections!
Fantasy Golf: 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic DFS Player Selections
Rickie Fowler
Rickie Fowler arrives at this week’s tournament on the heels of four consecutive top 13 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a fifth-place result at the 2023 U.S. Open two weeks ago.
In relation to this week’s current listed Rocket Mortgage Classic field, in the last 50 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Rickie Fowler ranks third in strokes gained tee to green, third in strokes gained approach, 12th in strokes gained around the green, and first in birdie or better percentage.
Yes, I know that Rickie Fowler has not enjoyed previous success at the Detroit Golf Club. Having stated that, I am not concerned. Why? Entering last week’s Travelers Championship many believed that Rickie’s less-than-stellar results at that event in previous years would be indicative of how he would perform at the tournament in 2023.
Those that believed that narrative were clearly wrong based on the data. More specifically, Rickie Fowler posted a 13th-place result at last week’s 2023 Travelers Championship.
J.J. Spaun
At face value, you probably think I am crazy for backing J.J. Spaun. After all, Spaun arrives at this week’s event on the heels of multiple lackluster performances on the PGA Tour, including a missed cut at last week’s Travelers Championship. I certainly can’t argue with that narrative.
Having stated that, I observed that J.J. Spaun has arrived to the Rocket Mortgage Classic in poor form previously and still posted a relatively good result (relative to Spaun’s overall talent level). Due to my previous statement, I decided to take a hard look at J.J. Spaun’s overall career player statistics relative to the field, in comparison with all of Spaun’s past career rounds played at the Detroit Golf Club.
Since 2019, J.J. Spaun has played 109 tournaments on the PGA Tour. Of those 109 events just mentioned, J.J. Spaun’s overall cumulative strokes gained putting for his 16 career rounds played at the Detroit Golf Club is 15.4 strokes. In summary, Spaun’s best career putting performances, at least from a strokes gained putting perspective, have taken place at the Detroit Golf Club.
Brian Harman
Brian Harman has accumulated three top-29 finishes in his last six tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including a seventh-place result at the 2023 RBC Heritage in April.
Full disclosure, I backed Brian Harman last week and he rewarded me with a second-place finish. I see no reason to get off the train just yet. I am rolling with Brian Harman again.
Additional golfers I like this week: Cam Davis: Chez Reavie: Ludvig Aberg: Cam Champ: Chris Kirk.
