2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Top 10 Power Rankings
Justin Thomas is making his Rocket Mortgage Classic debut this week. It’s a bit surprising to see him tee it up this week in what will be his third straight event, but he could use the FedEx Cup points.
It’s been a bit of a disappointing season as the two-time major champion has yet to win a tournament since his stirring win at the 2022 PGA Championship.
Thomas may have found a little something last week at the Travelers Championship. He arrived to TPC River Highlands with T65-MC-MC in his last three starts. The bookending results were in majors.
JT appeared on his way to another short week after an opening round even-par 70 with the 36-hole cut eventually getting to 4-under.
He’s one who can heat up quickly and he did just that, carding a 64 the next day. He followed with 62-67 on the weekend to salvage T-9th. That was his first top-10 since T-10th at the Valspar Championship in March.
"“I just played well. I haven’t necessarily tried to do anything different. Just obviously a little more confidence,” Thomas was transcribed by ASAP Sports after round three of the Travelers. ”Just obviously more confidence, but am actually having fun playing golf, which is something I haven’t been able to say for a while.”"
The former Alabama Crimson Tide’s strength this season has been his short game. Thomas ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around-the-green (.461). He’s a positive in every SG category except for putting, which continues to plague him.
Thomas should be able to eat up the par-5s this week. He’s 10th in par-5 scoring (4.52) and sixth in par-5 birdie or better percentage (53.53%).
I like him to pick up another top-10 this week and get some momentum going into the Open Championship next month.
