Matt Fitzpatrick has a knack for playing well at The Renaissance Club.

He hasn’t missed playing the Genesis Scottish Open since it arrived to North Berwick in 2019. He debuted in 2019 with a T-14th finish (67-65-67-68), “only” finished T-42nd (69-72-72-70) in 2020, rocketed up to T-2nd (66-66-67-67) in 2021 and was in the top 10 again last year at T-6th (71-66-70-70).

Fitzy was oh so close in 2021, losing in a playoff with Thomas Detry and eventual champion, Min Woo Lee.

It seems Fitzpatrick’s got a good game plan around here and is sticking to it.

"“…for me, the big thing is I feel like I’ve been pretty conservative around this golf course and just playing pretty safe, and I feel like that’s been the smart thing to do and just not made the mistakes maybe that some others have,” Fitzpatrick was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2021. “I think if I can keep doing that tomorrow and keep the putter going, then I’ll be okay.”"

The Englishman arrives to the United Kingdom off of two weeks’ rest. He’s been a bit up and down this season, in part due to injuries early in 2023, but the trend is ticking back upward.

Fitzpatrick won a PGA Tour designated event, the RBC Heritage, in April. A rare missed cut at the PGA Championship has given way to three straight top-20s, including T-7th at Muirfield Village and T-17th at the U.S. Open, before T-49th in his last outing at the Travelers Championship.

Fitzpatrick ranks 17th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained per round (1.145). He’s getting it done the most with the putter, which has him 18th in that SG category (.521).

Fitzpatrick’s also 17th in scrambling (64.45%).
