Each week I will provide my favorite chalk and Dark Horse plays for the upcoming DraftKings DFS slate. This week I will highlight my favorite DraftKings plays for the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club.

A value play is determined by a golfer being underpriced or coming in at lower ownership. I’ll also establish who will be the most rostered on the slate; also known as the “chalk”.

We always want to play the best plays but need leverage as well. Determining the difference between good “chalk” (highly owned) and bad “chalk” is essential.

I’ll list which of the high-owned golfers I like the most this week. Pairing those plays with lower-owned and/or lower-priced golfers (Dark Horses) is the optimal way to build and gives us the best route to winning a DraftKings contest.

*Ownership projections are estimates and will vary from contest to contest. The percentage provided is in regard to guaranteed prize pools on DraftKings.

2023 Genesis Scottish Open: Favorite Chalk Plays

Patrick Cantlay ($10,200)

DK Ownership: 15-17% – Cantlay looked great in round four of the Travelers en route to a 4th-place finish. He gained seven strokes on approach and 11.6 strokes tee to green for the tournament.

He’s gained strokes off the tee in 12 straight tournaments. Over the last 50 rounds, he’s 1st in par 5 scoring, 2nd in strokes gained off the tee, 9th in fairways gained, and 9th in opportunities gained.

Cantlay shot a 67 on Sunday en route to finishing 4th at the Genesis Scottish Open last year.

Justin Rose ($8,700)

DK Ownership: 15-17% – Rose has obviously played well overseas throughout his career. He just finished seven under and 4th-place on the back of a good ball-striking week at the Betfred British Masters.

He missed the cut at the US Open but previously came 8th, 9th, and 12th place, gaining over four strokes on approach over that span.

Over the last 24 rounds, Rose is 6th in strokes gained approach, 7th around the green, 10th in opportunities gained, and 2nd in sand saves, which will definitely come in handy with all the pot bunkers around the Renaissance Club.

2023 Genesis Scottish Open: 4 Dark Horse Contenders

1. Wyndham Clark ($9,000)

DK Ownership: 12-14% – Clark has already won twice this year at the Wells Fargo and US Open.

He’s gained strokes on approach in eight of his last nine tournaments and strokes tee to green in 13 of his last 14 tournaments.

Over the last 50 rounds, Wyndham is 4th in strokes gained approach, 4th in opportunities gained, 5th in par 5 scoring, and 11th in scrambling.

2. Aaron Rai ($7,800)

DK Ownership: 13-15% – Rai has finished 9th, 24th, 3rd, missed a cut, and 12th, in his last five tournaments. Excluding the missed cut he’s gained an average of 8.4 strokes tee to green over that span.

Over the last 24 rounds, he’s 1st in fairways gained, 3rd in par 5 scoring, and 5th in strokes gained approach.

Rai won the Genesis Scottish Open in 2020 defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff with a final score of 11 under.

3. Robert MacIntyre ($7,400)

DK Ownership: 7-10% – MacIntyre has played well recently on the DP World Tour. He shot 11 under last week and finished 4th in the Made in Himmerland. He drove the ball very well and gained strokes putting.

Previously, he came 39th at the Betfred British Masters, 18th at the BMW International Open, missed the cut at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed, and came 14th at the Porsche European Open.

So far in 2023, he has four top-10 finishes and seven top-20 finishes. He also finished 18th at the Genesis Scottish Open in 2021 and 14th in 2020.

4. Thriston Lawrence ($6,800)

DK Ownership: 4-6% – Lawrence has not played well in the United States but has performed well on the DP World Tour. He recently won the BMW International Open.

He’s gained strokes putting in four of his last five tournaments.

He’s a good driver of the ball whose accuracy off the tee has increased recently. Hitting fairways is a definite advantage at the Renaissance Club.
