2023 Wyndham Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Sedgefield
J.T. Poston is a past champion who also carries great form into the week.
Let’s start with his record at the Wyndham Championship. On the surface, three made cuts in six tries at Sedgefield doesn’t stand out above the fray.
His 2019 win certainly stands out. The Post Man was bogey-free all week while shooting 65-65-66-62 to defeat native son, Webb Simpson, by a shot.
It was a home game of sorts for Poston, too. He grew up about 100 miles southwest of Greensboro in Hickory, North Carolina. Poston also played college golf about three and a half hours away at Western Carolina.
"“Yeah, it feels unbelievable. I mean, a dream come true,” Poston was quoted by TeeScripts in 2019. “You know, I’ve always dreamt that I could win out here and I felt like I kind of proved that. Gave myself some chances over the years. But to be able to do it here in North Carolina with a lot of friends and family, I don’t think I could have drawn it up any better.”"
Poston missed the cut in his 2021 title defense. He bounced back to shoot 66-70-69-66 for T-21st last year.
The 30-year-old comes to North Carolina with three top-10s in his last four starts. He recorded back-to-back T-6th finishes at the John Deere Classic and Genesis Scottish Open and in his last start earned T-2nd at the 3M Open.
No one was beating wire-to-wire champion Lee Hodges last week in Minnesota, but Poston got as low as 20-under and at least made his buddy Hodges have to earn it.
A costly triple bogey on the last hole cost Poston solo second.
Poston has had a nice follow-up season after making the 2022 Tour Championship. He is up to five top-10s and made the cut in three of four majors, including recently at The Open Championship where he tied for 41st.
Poston ranks second on the PGA Tour in approach proximity from 75-100 yards (13’).
