Denny McCarthy has been one of the best players this season on the PGA Tour without a win. In fact, the American is the seventh-highest winless man in the FedEx Cup standings.

McCarthy’s closest call came at a designated event, the Memorial Tournament. He led much of the way before settling for his best career finish, solo second.

That heartbreak didn’t keep him from more good showings. McCarthy followed with T-20th in his next start at the U.S. Open. He added T-7th at another designated event, the Travelers Championship, and took T-6th at the John Deere Classic.

The former Virginia Cavalier is up to six top-10s in the 2022-23 season. He’s already made his way into the American Ryder Cup captain’s pick discussion. A win here and/or in the FedEx Cup Playoffs would help his cause tremendously.

McCarthy has a solid resume at the Wyndham Championship. He owns four made cuts in five tries. He’s finished T-36th or higher each time playing the weekend and took T-9th (67-68-66-63) in 2020.

The 30-year-old ranks third in strokes gained per round putting (.824) and is first inside 10 feet (91.71%). McCarthy also tied for the lowest round on the PGA Tour this season with a 10-under 60 in round one of the Travelers.

He’s 16th in total SG (1.198) and top-70 in all SG categories.

One knock on McCarthy is he’s not a long hitter, but that doesn’t matter too much this week in North Carolina. I expect him to better his previous career best at this event.
