The Rundown: 2023 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield CC
By Derek Helm
The last tournament of the regular season is here with The Wyndham Championship. Golfers will have their final chance to make it to or move up the top 70 in the FedEx Cup rankings.
The Wyndham Championship will be played at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Last year, Tom Kim gained a ridiculous 12.5 strokes putting and won by five strokes over Sungjae Im and John Huh. He shot a 61 on Sunday and finished at 20 under for the tournament.
In 2021 there was a six-man playoff with Kevin Kisner, Branden Grace, Adam Scott, Kevin Na, Roger Sloan, and Si Woo Kim all shooting 15 under. Kevin Kisner birdied the 2nd playoff hole to secure the victory.
Sedgefield is a Donald Ross designed 7,125 yard par 70 with Bermuda greens. There are four par threes and two par fives. The par fives are reachable in two by most golfers and play as the easiest holes on the course. Eight of the twelve par fours measure between 400-450 yards. The 507-yard, par 4, 18th hole is the most difficult hole on the course.
Off-the-tee, golfers will have easy-to-hit fairways with 70% of drives finding the fairway. Many golfers choose to hit less than driver to setup the correct angle for approach shots. Playing from the fairway significantly increases the chances of hitting greens in regulation here. Driving distance comes in slightly below tour average which is likely attributed to the aforementioned less than driver strategy.
Greens in regulation percentage is higher than tour average coming in at 72 percent. Shorter irons will be relied upon heavily with 26 percent of approach shots coming from 150-175 yards.
Hitting greens doesn’t necessarily lead to better scoring with heavy undulations and slopes on these fast Bermuda greens. Three putts are more prominent at Sedgefield than tour average.
There are 156 Golfers in the field with the top 65 and ties making the cut after 36 holes.
