A top-10 in his last start on the PGA Tour and a top-five in his last start at the FedEx St. Jude Championship earn Tony Finau a spot in this week’s power rankings.

He’s a golfer with a lot at stake this weekend as he tries to show American Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson that he’s worthy of a pick onto the team.

Finau has been on the last two teams, as well as last year’s Presidents Cup team, but a sleepy 2022-23 PGA Tour season has left the door ajar.

Finau does have two wins this season, which is no small feat considering how recently it was when he couldn’t win a dang thing. However, hoisting trophies at the Cadence Bank Houston Open and Mexico Open at Vidanta isn’t flashy.

Finau recovered nicely from a missed cut at The Open Championship to post T-7th in his title defense at the 3M Open. Lee Hodges ran away with the title that week, but Finau was waiting to pounce had he crumbled down the stretch like Scott Piercy did in a similar scenario in 2022.

The 33-year-old is up to five top-10s and 12 top-25s.

This will be Finau’s sixth appearance at TPC Southwind. He peaked last year at the FedEx St. Jude Championship by finishing T-5th (64-68-69-68) and four shots back.

Finau can’t always bomb it away at this venue, but he’s seeming to get the hang of when to lay back and when to push it.

"“It’s one of those courses where if you miss the fairway, that’s kind of why you see the fluctuation of scores,” Finau was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2019. “If you’re not hitting fairways, you’re going to shoot over par, no question. And if you’re hitting fairways, you can attack this golf course.”"

It can sometimes be the putter that lets him down. Not at this event in 2022, when FInau was ninth in the field in strokes gained per round putting (.99).

Finau ranks 11th on the PGA Tour in total SG (1.557) and seventh in SG approach (.776).
