Rory McIlroy Roasts Phil Mickelson Again With Savage Comment
Tension between Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson continues to escalate, and on Thursday, Rory wasted no time firing another shot Phil’s way.
Phil Mickelson once again found himself amongst headlines on Thursday after several excerpts from Billy Walters’ upcoming new book “Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk” were released.
The excerpts from Walters’ new book, revealed by the Firepit Collective, allege that Mickelson had wagered around $1 billion over the last three decades. The excerpt goes on to suggest that Phil Mickelson also attempted to bet around 400 thousand dollars on the U.S. Team at the 2012 Ryder Cup.
"In late September 2012, Phil called me from Medinah Country Club just outside Chicago, site of the 39th Ryder Cup matches between the United States and Europe. He was feeling supremely confident that the American squad led by Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, and Phil himself was about to reclaim the Cup from the Euros. He was so confident that he asked me to place a $400,000 wager for him on the U.S. team to win.I could not believe what I was hearing.“Have you lost your f—— mind?” I told him. “Don’t you remember what happened to Pete Rose?” The former Cincinnati Reds manager was banned from baseball for betting on his own team. “You’re seen as a modern-day Arnold Palmer,” I added. “You’d risk all that for this? I want no part of it.’’“Alright, alright,” he replied."
Since then, Mickelson released a statement denying that he had ever attempted to place the bet on the Ryder Cup.
Rory McIlroy slams Phil Mickelson with savage comment.
Ever since Phil Mickelson left the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf last year, there has been no love lost between himself and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy.
The Northern Irishman revealed exactly how he felt about Mickelson during the Netflix Documentary series “Full Swing” when McIlroy was captured on cameras during one of the episodes shouting out “**** You, Phil”.
Now, playing at this year’s first FedEx Cup Playoff event in Memphis, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, McIlroy was asked what his reaction to the latest news surrounding Phil Mickelson was.
Rory quickly wasted no time in firing another shot at Phil by responding with “At least he can bet on the Ryder Cup this year because he won’t be a part of it.”
Following the surprise announcement back in June that the PGA and LIV were working on a potential merger, McIlroy has taken a step back out of the spotlight and has even elected to bypass some opportunities with media at certain times as he focuses on his game on the course.
Clearly, the chance to fire off another shot in Phil’s direction was too good of an opportunity to pass up on this occasion.
Rory McIlroy will be aiming to defend his FedEx Cup title at East Lake in a few weeks’ time and he is off to a solid start at this week’s first playoff event after firing an opening round-67 at TPC Southwind on Thursday.
