2023 RSM Classic: Top 10 power rankings at Sea Island GC
I had to double-check that J.T. Poston’s never won the RSM Classic. It just seems like an event he’d pick off.
Maybe it’s the North Carolina native’s affinity for playing in the southeastern U.S. Poston won the 2019 Wyndham Championship in his home state and has posted top-10s at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina and Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi, for example.
Poston surprisingly missed his first three cuts at Sea Island. He finally got in the money in 2019 with T-14th (66-70-68-66) and added T-21st (70-67-66-67) last year.
The Western Carolina University alum was sixth in last year’s RSM field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green (1.64 per round). He was in the positive in every SG category except for putting, where he was a slight negative.
Poston ranks 32nd on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting (.356 per round). He’s not a long hitter, but that’s not a big deal this week at the Plantation and Seaside courses. The 30-year-old is 35th in greens in regulation (68.4%).
Poston is tops in approach proximity from 75-100 yards (12’10”) and sixth from inside 100 yards (13’11”).
He comes to Georgia well-rested. He’s hoping he can still carry over the swing feels that helped him to T-3rd his last time out a month ago at the Shriners Children’s Open. That was his fifth straight top-25 and third top-10 in that span. He owns eight top-10s in 2023 and would love to finally cash in on his first win of the year.
