Fantasy Golf: An Early Look at the 2024 Masters Tournament
By Hans Geevers
The first major of 2024 will be played at Augusta National Golf Club in April. Although we are four months away from the event, in my opinion, it’s never too early to start your fantasy golf/DFS research for the Masters Tournament!
Prior to diving into my early fantasy golf/DraftKings player selections for the 2024 Masters Tournament, let’s take a look at a few of the key player statistics of the last three winners of the green jacket, relative to the field, the week that player won the tournament.
Last Three Masters Tournament Winners
2023-Jon Rahm: Third in GIR (greens in regulation- 72.2%), third in putts per GIR (1.818), and fourth in driving accuracy (85.7%).
2022-Scottie Scheffler: Eighth in Driving Accuracy (76.8%), fifth in GIR (68.1%), and third in bogey avoidance (9).
2021-Hideki Matsuyama: Seventh in GIR (69.5%), fourth in bogey avoidance (9), and third in putts per GIR (2.286).
*Augusta National does not provide strokes gained data to the public.
Now let’s shift our attention to my favorite early first-look DFS/fantasy golf player selections for the 2024 Masters!
Rory McIlroy
Since the beginning of June, Rory McIlroy has played 12 events (PGA and DP World Tours combined). In those 12 tournaments just noted, Rory McIlroy accumulated ten top 11 finishes, including a win at the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open in July.
Rory McIlroy has also posted quality results at Augusta National Golf Club multiple times over the course of his career. Let me be more specific. Since 2014, Rory McIlroy has played the Masters Tournament ten times. In those ten tournaments just noted, Rory McIlroy accumulated an impressive seven top-ten finishes, including a second-place result at the 2022 Masters Tournament.
Scottie Scheffler
The 2022 Masters winner has accumulated eight top-five finishes in his last 12 tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including a win at the 2023 Hero World Challenge last week.
Jordan Spieth
The talented Texan has accumulated two top-six finishes in his last four events played on the PGA Tour, including a sixth-place result at the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship in August.
Additionally, Jordan Spieth checks the box for me when it comes to previous event/course history. Since 2014, Jordan Spieth has played the Masters Tournament ten times. In those ten tournaments just mentioned, Jordan Spieth has accumulated six top 11 finishes, including a win at the 2015 Masters Tournament.
Additional golfers I would recommend: Jon Rahm: Viktor Hovland: Sungjae Im: Brooks Koepka.
