After one of the most entertaining regular seasons in recent memory, the PGA Tour Playoffs are finally upon us, as the three-week postseason kicks off this week in Memphis with the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Sadly, the playoff opener will only feature 69 of the top 70 finishers in the FedEx Cup standings, as second-place Rory McIlroy will not be teeing it up at TPC Southwind, a decision that's certainly not sitting well with everyone and could lead to a future rule change.
This really isn't a shock, as McIlroy said all the way back in November of last year that he'd likely skip out on this event, as his 68th-place finish a season ago did nearly nothing to affect his place in the standings, dropping him down just a single spot. So, while the move might make sense, especially given how the Tour Championship will no longer use the staggered-stroke format, it's still disappointing.
As for those who are in the field, it should as no surprise that world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who also holds the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings by a wide margin, is the heavy betting favorite heading into the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Playing his first event since winning The Open Championship at Royal Portrush, Scheffler enters the week getting +280 odds to win.
Sitting in a distant second is world No. 3 Xander Schauffele (+1800), who failed to record a victory this year and enters the postseason in 42nd place in the FedEx Cup standings, which would put him into next week's BMW Championship but not in the Tour Championship, which, of course, is reserved for the top 30 at the conclusion of the first two events.
Rounding out the top five are Tommy Fleetwood (+2200), Justin Thomas (+2500), and Matt Fitzpatrick (+2800). Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama sits in a tie for ninth at +3500.
