There is certainly no shortage of storylines heading into the 2025 PGA Championship.
Can Jordan Spieth finally complete the career Grand Slam? Can Xander Schauffele become just the third player to take the Wanamaker Trophy in back-to-back years since the tournament shifted to stroke play in 1958? Can Scottie Scheffler win a major at a venue not named Augusta National? The list goes on.
Then, of course, there's Rory McIlroy, who, if you haven't heard, finally ended his 10-plus-year major championship drought last month at The Masters, thus completing the historic task Spieth is attempting to accomplish this week.
With the career Grand Slam out of the way, Rory, who also owns victories at Pebble Beach and The Players this year, will now attempt to claim the second leg of the unprecedented calendar Slam. And in another instance of in case you haven't heard, McIlroy has owned Quail Hollow over the years.
In addition to his four victories in Charlotte, the most recent of which came just last year, the Northern Irishman also owns five additional top-10s.
Given his track record at Quail Hollow and the fact that he's easily been the best player on the planet this year, one would think Rory would be the automatic favorite to win the 2025 PGA Championship, right?
Wrong.
That honor belongs to Scheffler, who enters the week with +425 odds. To be fair, the world No. 1 is coming off a historic win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, where he shot a ridiculous 31-under to claim his 14th PGA Tour title.
That said, though, it's not as if the field at TPC Craig Ranch could be considered anywhere close to elite. Nevertheless, a win is a win. And as Scheffler has now spent more than 100 consecutive weeks in the top spot in the world rankings, he's certainly earned his position at the top of this week's betting odds.
Rory is a close second at +500, with LIV Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau (+950) and Jon Rahm (+1800) taking up the next two slots. Schauffele and Justin Thomas, who captured the first of his two PGA Championship titles the last time this tourney was held at Quail Hollow in 2017, are tied for the fifth-shortest odds at +2200.
