Coming off a thrilling week in Houston that saw Min Woo Lee capture his first PGA Tour victory, the Texas two-step toward The Masters concludes this week at TPC San Antonio for the annual playing of the Valero Texas Open.
While many high-profile players are participating this week to get their games in shape for Augusta, the vast majority of those in the 147-man field need a victory to secure a spot in the season's first major championship, a list that includes Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland, Si Woo Kim, Francesco Molinari, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, and Charley Hoffman.
And one certainly can't forget about Ben Griffin, who fell just short of qualifying in Houston, ultimately losing a battle with Michael Kim down the stretch to get into the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Griffin comes into the week ranked 51st.
As for those who are in the top 50, 16 such players are set to tee it up TPC San Antonio, with Ludvig Åberg being the highest-ranked at No. 5.
The Swedish superstar, who's coming off a rare missed cut at The Players Championship, is also the betting favorite, coming into the week with +1200 odds to win. Åberg tied for 14th here a season ago.
Two-time Texas Open champ Corey Conners and Tommy Fleetwood are tied for the second-shortest odds at +1600, while Patrick Cantlay (+1800), 2021 winner Jordan Spieth (+2000), and Hideki Matsuyama (+200) take up the next three slots.
Defending champion Akshay Bhatia, who defeated Denny McCarthy a year ago to earn the final spot at The Masters, is one of two players getting +2500 odds, the other being Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley. McCarthy is just below at +2800.
