Amelia Garvey set to battle for her tour card

Despite missing part of the Epson Tour season, New Zealand-born golfer Amelia Garvey is ready to take on the challenge of competing in the LPGA Q Series. She has been forced to miss two tournaments on the tour due to a rib injury but is looking to bounce back.

The injury came after her performance at the Indian Wells Championship, which saw the 24-year-old finish in a tie for 13th place. It was not her best performance this season. She tied for second place at the Firekeepers Casino Hotel Championship in June.

Amelia Garvey had made eight cuts this season before her injury.

Her decision may have held her back in terms of points though. After Indian Wells, she was in 47th place on the Epson Tour, just 12 spots out of the ever-important top 35 to qualify. She recently spoke about her decision to rest and recover from injury.

“Even as an amateur, I was never injured before, and I had never skipped an Epson Tour event, so it was tough. I think mentally going into the back end of the year, I felt like I had started playing better. To have to take a couple of weeks off is really tough, but it is what it is," Garvey told epsontour.com.

An impressive stat for the golfer looking to qualify is the number of eagles she has on tour this season. With 10, she sits in third place on the Epson Tour. She also is in eleventh place for scoring average in the final round on tour. Her average on the pivotal day is 68.00.

She finished the opening round of the qualifier with a 71. To start, she had four birdies at Plantation Golf and Country Club's Bobcat course. She will look to continue to push to qualify for the rest of the week.

There are no cuts at the tournament and Garvey and the rest of the field will continue to play all 72 holes this week.
