The American Express payout distribution 2025: Purse, winner's prize money
For the first time in 2025, the PGA Tour returned to the mainland for its annual trip to the Coachella Valley. The American Express in La Quinta, California, welcomed a strong field for the second full-field event of the new season.
Even with top OWGR-ranked players Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele pulling out of the event prior to this year's edition, the 2025 American Express welcomed some big names to the desert for the third event on the calendar. While some stars including Jason Day, Justin Thomas, and Patrick Cantlay ensured that they would be a part of the equation come Sunday, other big names faltered and missed out on the opportunity to tee it up in the final round of this unique event after missing the Saturday cut.
Going into the final round of this year's American Express, one man, Sepp Straka, had created some separation between himself and the rest of the chasing pack following three exceptional rounds of golf. The 31-year-old followed rounds of 65 and 64 on two different courses across the first two days with a bogey-free 8-under 64 at La Quinta Country Club on Moving Day. The two-time PGA Tour winner would look to secure win number three during his final round on the PGA West Stadium Course.
Straka would look to hold off chasers including the aforementioned Jason Day, who found himself four shots adrift of the lead going into the final round of The American Express, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, and others. All of whom would look to capitalize on any slip-ups by the leader during the final round. Whether it was Straka, Day, Cantlay, Thomas, or any number of the chasing pack who emerged victorious, all were vying for a significant share of this year's American Express prize purse. How much was at stake in 2025, though? Let's take a look at The American Express purse, winner's share, and payout distribution breakdown by finishing position for this year's event in California.
The American Express purse 2025: Total purse and winner's prize money
The purse for The American Express is set at $8.8 million in 2025 with this year's champion in the desert taking home a winner's share of $1.584 million. The purse for this year's American Express is an increase from the $8.4 million sum that was divvied out to the field last year and marks the fourth consecutive season the event has witnessed an increase in prize money. While this year's overall purse at The American Express may pale in comparison to some of the enormous amounts that will be divvied out at some of the season's marquee events, it will still provide a substantial prize for the champion to go along with all of the other perks that come with winning an event on the PGA Tour.

The American Express purse is likely to rank on the lower-end of prize purses on the PGA Tour this season, with that being said, the top 21 finishers in the Coachella Valley this year will all take home at least a six-figure prize for their efforts. Meanwhile, each of the top 12 finishers at the 2025 American Express will earn north of $200k in prize money.
In addition to taking home a seven-figure winner's share of this year's purse, The American Express champion in 2025 will also earn a crucial 500 FedEx Cup points in the season-long race to East Lake and the 2025 Tour Championship later in the year. The PGA Tour returns to the magnificent Torrey Pines next week for the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open.
