Originally designed in 1911 as a modest nine-hole course, Banff Springs was later transformed into an 18-hole championship layout in 1928 by legendary golf course architect Stanley Thompson. Known for its breathtaking mountain views, dramatic elevation changes, and natural integration with the rugged landscape, the course quickly gained a reputation as one of Canada’s premier golfing destinations. Over the years, it has hosted numerous prestigious events and remains a bucket-list course for golf enthusiasts.

As you step onto the first tee of the Stanley Thompson 18 (the Rundle 9), it’s immediately apparent that this is not your typical golf course. The opening hole, a straightforward par 4, may seem simple at first, but stray shots to the left into the narrow fairway's rough bring an unexpected surprise—prairie dog dens scattered alongside, adding a unique and lively element to this world-class golf experience.

As you continue through Holes 2-4, it’s impossible not to be captivated by the breathtaking scenery, all while navigating the challenges of the course—and the occasional wildlife encounter. Each shot demands precision, as the rugged terrain and unpredictable elements keep you on edge.

Then, you arrive at Hole No. 4, the legendary Devil’s Cauldron, where the world seems to pause for a moment.

This iconic 165-yard par 3 is the crown jewel of Banff Springs

It features a dramatic tee box perched high above the green. The picturesque yet intimidating setting makes what would typically be a simple short-iron shot far more daunting. Adding to the challenge, the green slopes severely from back to front, ensuring that even well-struck approach shots require a deft touch to avoid trouble. It’s a hole that is as breathtaking as it is unforgiving, a true test of precision in one of the most stunning settings in golf.

After carefully navigating the treacherous Devil’s Cauldron, the course offers a welcome sense of calm, allowing you to fully soak in the breathtaking surroundings. The next stretch of holes provides a more serene golfing experience, though the challenge remains ever-present.

As you approach Holes 8 and 9, the course runs alongside the picturesque Bow River, adding another layer of natural beauty to your round. The rushing water, combined with the towering mountain backdrop, creates an unforgettable setting. Whether it's elk grazing in the distance or an eagle soaring overhead, these closing holes on the Rundle Nine offer both a visual and sensory experience that is uniquely Banff Springs.

As you transition to the Tunnel Mountain 9, you'll find yourself surrounded by familiar terrain and breathtaking views, with Holes 10-14 once again weaving alongside the Bow River. The rushing water and towering pines create a tranquil yet exhilarating atmosphere. Still, the real showstopper comes at Hole 15—a truly spectacular Par 4 that feels like something out of a fairytale.

Playing at roughly 386 yards, this dogleg right presents an air of mystery as you tee off into the unknown, aiming to clear the bunkers on the left for a prime approach shot. If executed successfully, you're rewarded with one of the most mesmerizing sights in golf—a green set against the backdrop of the Fairmont Banff Springs, its grand architecture resembling a Disney castle perched amidst the majestic Rockies.

After picking your jaw up off the floor, you move on to the Par 4 15th, which certainly doesn’t disappoint. From a tee box elevated above the fairway, you'll tee off over the Bow River once again, with a dense forest on your right. But here’s the unexpected twist—on your left sits a German Beer Hall. Yes, you read that right, a German Beer Hall right on the course.

After your tee shot, you'll descend down the mountain, perhaps stopping to grab a refreshing beverage of your choice, before continuing your round and ultimately finding your way back to the clubhouse. It’s a unique experience that blends the beauty of the course with a touch of unexpected charm, making for an unforgettable finish.

As I'm sure you can tell from the tone of my voice, this is truly a course I can't recommend highly enough. While the layout and design may not be revolutionary, the views and overall experience are unmatched. If you ever find yourself in the Banff Springs area, make sure to play this course—it will stay with you long after you've left, with the breathtaking images of the landscape etched in your memory.
