The Farmers Insurance Open is one of the few events on the PGA Tour schedule each year, outside of majors and signature events, that fans and players alike look forward to every season. Hosted at the beautiful Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California, each year, the event often attracts a handful of big names to the San Diego area.

As always, despite a plethora of withdrawals before the event, and a few more during the first round of the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open, several big names once again took on one of golf's iconic venues in 2025. Amongst them was emerging talent Ludvig Aberg who did what many anticipated coming into this year's event and got off to a fantastic start. The Swede, the second-highest OWGR-ranked player in the field heading into this year's Farmers Insurance Open, torched Torrey Pines' North Course with an opening 9-under 63 to set the early pace.

Much like last week's stop at The American Express, Aberg and others in attendance at this year's Farmers Insurance Open will take on multiple courses at Torrey Pines over the first two rounds, the North and South Courses. All will have their sights set on lifting the trophy come Saturday evening, but to realize that dream they will first need to make the cut at this year's Farmers Insurance Open. Unlike a large majority of stops this season, Torrey Pines often provides a stern test year in and year out for its fields. With that being said, this year's field will undoubtedly need to be at their best to make the weekend. How many players make the cut at the Farmers, though? And what has the historic cut line been at an event that has often challenged some of the very best? Let's take a look.

How many players make the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open?

It's a return to the norm at this year's Farmers Insurance Open following last week's guaranteed three rounds at The American Express. All 156 players in the field at Torrey Pines will play the South Course and the North Course on one of the first two days before a cut is made to the top 65 players and ties following 36 holes of action. The remaining two rounds will be played exclusively on the South Course at Torrey Pines for those who make this year's Farmers Insurance Open cut. These rules are obviously a bit different from what we see at a handful of events on the PGA Tour nowadays with most of this season's signature events on the schedule not implementing any kind of cut at the halfway point.

Farmers Insurance Open historic cut line: What was the cut at last year's tournament?

As mentioned, unlike some of the other events on the PGA Tour's schedule, the Farmers Insurance Open has a history of producing higher-than-average cut lines. In 2023, the cut line was even par in an event that was eventually won by Max Homa at 13-under par, a stark contrast from the -9 cut line at last week's event in Palm Springs. Here is a look at what the cut line has been in each of the last five editions of the Farmers Insurance Open.

A look back at the previous five cut lines at the Farmers Insurance Open only further illustrates the challenging test players encounter when they make the annual trip to Torrey Pines. Only twice in the last five editions has the cut line exceeded the 1-under-par mark, in both 2024 and 2022 when the number was -3. The 2020, 2021, and the aforementioned 2023 Farmers Insurance Open, have seen the cut line hovering around even par and 1-under.

Projected Farmers Insurance Open cut line: What will the cut be in 2025?

With the first round of the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open officially in the books, Data Golf is projecting a -2 cut line and giving it around a 38% chance of coming to fruition. This is a decent amount more than the next likeliest outcome of a -3 cut line which is currently being given around a 31% probability. Meanwhile, current projections are giving the common 1-under mark at Torrey Pines only around a 17% likelihood. A 2-under-par cut line would fall in line with what we have seen at the Farmers Insurance Open in recent years with Torrey Pines not yielding anything greater than 3-under-par over the last five editions of the tournament.
