Holding a two-shot advantage heading into Sunday's final round at Detroit Golf Club, the South African got off to a strong start, opening with a birdie at the first, but quickly saw his lead disappear with two bogeys over his next four holes.
He righted the ship with consecutive birdies at Nos. 7 and 8 and made the turn at 1-under following a par at the ninth.
Meanwhile, Potgeiter's playing partner for the day, Max Greyserman, matched his 20-under overall total by firing a 3-under 33 on the front nine. Playing two groups ahead, Chris Kirk was also 20-under at the halfway point, shooting a 33 of his own.
While several others kept themselves in the mix for a while, the tournament ultimately came down to these three, all of whom carded a 2-under 34 on the back nine.
With Kirk in the clubhouse at 22-under, Greyserman missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th to win outright, tapping in for par to tie, while Potgieter holed a five-foot par putt at the last to force a three-man playoff.
Replaying the 18th, the entire trio made par on the first extra hole, moving the action to the par-3 15th, where Kirk was eliminated after a three-putt bogey.
Potgieter and Greyserman moved on to the par-4 16th, each making par, and extended the match by each making birdie at the par-5 14th.
Once again playing the 15th as the fifth extra hole, Potgieter held the honor and hit his tee shot just under 18 feet from the hole, while Greyserman came up far shorter, leaving himself nearly twice that distance.
And after Greyserman blew his birdie effort a few feet past the cup, Potgieter found the bottom of it, draining his putt dead center to become the youngest South African ever to win on the PGA Tour.

With his maiden victory, the Petoria native took the $1.728 million winner's share of the $9.6 million purse, also earning 500 FedEx Cup points and a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.
Technically tying for second, Greyserman and Kirk each collected $854,400.
