PGA Tour Power Rankings: Farmers Insurance Open

The PGA Tour makes its way to San Diego this week for the Farmers Insurance Open. Here are the players whose games should soar as high as the paragliders that dominate the TV coverage of the event.

4. Hideki Matsuyama

Already a winner this year, it's starting to feel like Matsuyama is going to have a really good year on Tour, and his hot start should carry on to the mainland. Matsuyama has performed well over the past couple of years at Torrey Pines, with a top-10 and a top-15 finish in the last couple years when he hasn't entered the Farmers Insurance Open as hot as he is right now. Matsuyama also has the highest average strokes gained per round out of anyone in the field, giving him the case that he should actually be #1 in these power rankings. I really have him here at #4 to try and avoid any Boston Common Golf bias showing itself in this analysis.

3. Harry Hall

Editor's note: Harry Hall withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open on Monday.

When it comes to ranking players, I have found that Data Golf has a more all-encompassing ranking system than OWGR, and is more trustworthy on a week-to-week basis. One of the key things I like looking at is guys with the largest discrepancy between the two rankings, and Harry Hall has one of the largest discrepancies on the PGA Tour right now, with his Data Golf ranking being almost 50 spots higher than his current OWGR ranking. While Hall has not historically been a strong driver of the golf ball, he has shown a knack for being strong in approach and around the greens, which should be able to lead him to success around Torrey Pines this week. This may be my riskiest pick for the power rankings, but I'm willing to ride the Harry Hall train until it comes off the tracks.
