OWGR: 28th. FedEx Cup: 14th. Akshay Bhatia. 20243MOpen/PowerRank/2. 2

After a disappointing missed cut at the last major championship of the year, Akshay Bhatia made himself a late addition to the 3M Open field.

He had been playing great golf this season prior to missing the cut by one at Royal Troon. Bhatia won his second career PGA Tour event this spring at the Valero Texas Open. It was also his second in as many years counting his 2023 Barracuda Championship victory.

Recently, the 22-year-old contended at a Signature Event, the Travelers Championship (T-5th). He was in the final group on Sunday before running out of gas.

Bhatia seemed to have the Rocket Mortgage Classic in his grasp the next week until three-putting the 72nd hole to lose by one and settle for T-2nd.

Through July 14, Bhatia is 10th on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Total (1.141). The lanky lefty is also 17th in SG: Approach (.494), 20th in SG: Tee-to-Green (.759), and 27th in SG: Putting (.382).

If he can tidy up the short game, which still ranks him 53rd in scrambling (61.9%), the sky is the limit.

Bhatia should be able to attack the par-5s this week. He’s 25th in average approach proximity from 200-plus yards (48’1”).

This will be Bhatia’s debut at the 3M Open. While he would have loved to make the cut last week at The Open Championship, getting an early flight back to the U.S. to acclimate to the time change and heat on this side of the pond should be an advantage.
