2024 3M Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Twin Cities
Tony Finau is in his comfort zone at TPC Twin Cities.
He’s played the 3M Open every year since it debuted in 2019 and has yet to finish outside the top 30.
Finau contended down to the finish in 2020 where he posted 65-66-69-68 for T-3rd.
He came out on top a couple years later, winning by three after rounds of 67-68-65-67. Finau defended his title admirably in 2023, recording 66-66-67-70 for T-7th.
This week’s venue is not overly penal from the tee box. There’s plenty of water guarding greens to be wary of on approach, but the former Champions Tour venue is bomber-friendly.
“It was soft and it was long and I don't mind that,” Finau was transcribed in 2019 by Tee Scripts. “There's some beast of holes out there and this is a beast of a golf course. Fairways aren't playing firm, so some of those 500-yard holes you're hitting into the wind today and mid irons in there, 5-irons, 6-irons, 7-irons. So not really the clubs I'm used to hitting in on par 4s, but I did like the look of it when I first saw it.”
Finau had the chance to get to Minnesota early after missing the cut last week at The Open Championship.
He was far from the only big name to slip up at Royal Troon.
I’m treating that as an anomaly. Finau was in great form prior to Scotland with five straight top-20s and three straight top-10s. He contended at the U.S. Open to take T-3rd and followed it up the next week with T-5th at the Travelers Championship.
Through July 14, Finau ranks eighth on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Total (1.194). He’s third in SG: Approach (.865), ninth in SG: Tee-to-Green (1.391), and 15th in SG: Around-the-Green (.361).
Finau is not afraid of a birdie fest, especially when the greens aren’t too tricky. He’s 13th in birdie average (4.28 per round).
