2024 3M Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Twin Cities
We might as well give Nick Dunlap PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors right now.
He did the unthinkable earlier this year, winning as an amateur at The American Express. He was the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour in 33 years and the second youngest winner in the last 90 years. Oh yeah, and he nearly shot 59 in the process.
That was back in January. Dunlap soon opted to forgo the rest of his season at Alabama and turned pro. He experienced some growing pains with no top-50s in his next five starts.
The 20-year-old has regained some form with five top-30s since March leading up to last week’s Barracuda Championship.
Dunlap was having a nice tournament through three rounds and was in good shape to notch another top-30. He certainly did that, and then some.
Dunlap carded the round of the tournament in this modified Stableford format that netted him 19 points and vaulted him 27 spots up the leaderboard for a two-point victory. His round equated to a bogey-free 62 if it were stroke play.
“Your expectations go through the roof a little bit and I knew I needed to get a lot better at a couple different aspects of my game and one of them was driving the golf ball and chipping, and I've worked very, very hard,” Dunlap was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “I started working with Josh Gregory a couple months ago. He's helped me tremendously with my short game and kind of structuring my practice out here, and those two things have gotten a lot better and that's kind of the things I've been focusing on.”
Dunlap was second in the field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (5.455) and fifth in SG: Putting (5.481).
He generates a ton of club head speed as a lot of youngsters do. He ranks 18th on the PGA Tour in that stat (120.86).
Dunlap will be able to mash at the ball this week at TPC Twin Cities, where he’s making his 3M Open debut.
