The PGA Tour is back in action after taking a week off for last week’s major championship proceedings at Valhalla.

It’s quite the contrast going from the beefy 7,600-yard layout last week to a famed track in Colonial Country Club that played under 7,000 yards for much of its existence. Today, the Perry Maxwell design plays at 7,209 yards for a par 70 at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The tournament dates back to 1946. It’s steeped in history with Ben Hogan winning five wins there. It’s called Hogan’s Alley for a reason.

Colonial is distinctive for its narrow fairways, small greens and thick rough. Missing fairways is a no-no around here. Hitting less than driver is quite common to ensure such a thing happens.

The course features Bermuda grass on tee boxes, fairways and rough. Greens are bentgrass.

You’ll see broadcasters this week mention The Horrible Horseshoe often. It’s holes 3-5 that ring around the course like a horseshoe and can sometimes make it feel like you’ve been trodden by a horseshoe.

If players can escape that stretch of the course without suffering too much damage, there’s hay to be made later on in the round.

Weather for this week in the metroplex shows it’s going to be a scorcher with temperatures between 70s-90s Fahrenheit. Rain looks to be a possibility on Thursday and Saturday.

We’ve got a solid field this week considering it’s the week after a major and does not have Signature Event status with the PGA Tour. The world No. 1 is present, and he’s brought some of his Dallas area friends with him.

Let’s see how many of them are in this week’s power rankings:
