2024 Charles Schwab Challenge: Top 10 power rankings at Colonial
Despite this event leading to heartache in his debut in 2020, Collin Morikawa continues to frequent the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Four top-40s at Colonial throughout his career have resulted in that being a sound financial decision.
Morikawa was the man to beat in ‘20, posting 64-67-67-67 to settle for solo second thanks to his balky putter costing him down the stretch.
He took T-14th (69-66-72-68) in 2021 where he contended through 36 holes. His most recent visit in 2023 resulted in T-29th (73-67-70-70).
“I thought the course fit me really well,” ASAP Sports quoted Morikawa on Colonial in 2020. “It's a ball striker's course, had to hit it in the fairway, and it was crazy because it just didn't seem like I was hitting as many fairways as I normally do... But overall I think it fits my game really well. You've got to put it in the fairway, and from there it's an approach shot course.”
The Cal-Berkeley alum comes in on an excellent string of form. Starting with T-3rd at the Masters, Morikawa has added solo ninth at the RBC Heritage, T-16th at the Wells Fargo Championship, and T-4th at the PGA Championship.
Those are all majors or Signature Events featuring uber-talented fields.
Morikawa ranks 30th on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Total (.714). He’s most known for his approach play, but his precision off the tee is carrying him this season. The 27-year-old leads in fairway percentage (78.74%), which will be a huge asset this week.
The fact that he’s 139th in driving distance (291.5) is not a huge detriment, either.
