2024 Charles Schwab Challenge: Top 10 power rankings at Colonial
If this were any other event this week, Scottie Scheffler would likely take a break. He deserves it after the hellish circumstances at Valhalla that led to his arrest during Friday of the PGA Championship. On the bright side, his arraignment was delayed from Tuesday to June 3.
The downside was that the tumult likely hindered his chances to win, where he was the prohibitive favorite. Scheffler battled back to shoot a 66 Friday and remain in contention, but he was likely running on fumes on Saturday when he shot a disappointing 2-over 73.
Credit Scheffler for battling back for a Sunday 65 to finish T-8th.
Did I mention that he’s a newborn dad, too? And that trusted caddie, Ted Scott, was away on Saturday due to his child’s graduation?
There was a lot working against Scheffler and he still finished top-10 against the world’s best.
The Dallas native must be thrilled to head home this week to the Metroplex. He’s the pick to get it done at the Charles Schwab Challenge where he’s had close calls to win his hometown event the last two years.
After going T-55th and MC his first two starts at Colonial, Scheffler grabbed solo second (66-65-68-72) in 2022 and T-3rd (67-67-72-67) in 2023. Scheffler lost in a playoff to Sam Burns in ‘22 and was a shot away from making a playoff in 2023.
The 27-year-old leads the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Total (2.813) by more than a half shot. He’s tops in all the SG ball striking stats and is improving the one weakness in his game since switching to the mallet putter.
It’s his time to win in front of family and friends in the galleries and further cement his status as the top player in the world.
